AVIF to JPG

Converting AVIF to JPG turns a next-generation image into one that opens everywhere. AVIF, built on the AV1 video codec, is roughly half the size of a JPEG at the same quality, which is why so many websites and CDNs now serve their images in it. But that efficiency comes at a cost: download one and Windows Photos, older editors, email clients, upload forms and print shops often can’t read a .avif file at all. JPG opens on essentially every device, app and service there is, so the conversion fixes the problem instantly and permanently.

The detail most AVIF to JPG converters get wrong is transparency. AVIF can store an alpha channel; JPG can’t — so any transparent areas have to be filled with a solid colour, and most tools quietly flatten them to white without asking. This one lets you pick the background colour first, so a logo, icon or product shot lands on exactly the shade you want. Everything runs in your browser using its own built-in AVIF decoder, which means there’s no library to download, nothing is uploaded to a server, there’s no watermark and no file-count cap. To cut bandwidth, a growing number of sites now deliver their pictures as AVIF, so a right-click “Save image as” hands you a .avif rather than the JPG or PNG you expected. The file itself is perfectly fine — it just needs converting before older software, a printer or a colleague on an older machine will open it.

How to convert AVIF to JPG on Windows and Mac

You have a few routes. On Windows, open a single AVIF in the Photos app and choose “…” → Save as, then pick JPG; on a Mac, open it in Preview and use File → Export → JPEG. Both are fine for one image, but slow and repetitive for a folder of them — and a folder is the usual situation when you’ve saved several AVIFs from a website or received a design export. Dropping the whole batch here converts them all at once and lets you download them as a single ZIP, with nothing to install and no admin rights needed. It works in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 16 and later — because the decoding is the browser’s own; a very old browser that predates AVIF support is the only thing that can’t do it.

Should you convert AVIF to JPG, or keep the AVIF?

Keep the AVIF whenever the image stays on the web, because it’s smaller and just as sharp, so your pages load faster. Convert to JPG the moment the image needs to leave that world — to be printed, emailed, opened in older design software, dropped into a document, or uploaded somewhere that rejects .avif. One honest point worth knowing: the JPG is usually larger than the AVIF you started with, because AVIF compresses more aggressively. You’re converting for compatibility, not to save space, and because both sizes are shown on every file the increase is never a surprise.
